How does Rhea Briscoe "Balance Life's Demands?"

BALANCE – A CONTROLLED WOBBLE

The steps of a man are established by the LORD,
And He delights in his way.
When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong,

Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.

                                                                           Psalm 37:23-24 NASB

My father-in-law defines balance as a “controlled wobble.” That statement always brings to mind the “Weebles,” a roly-poly toy my children played with as toddlers. Weebles were shaped like eggs and had a weight on the bottom that allowed the toy to stand erect or upright when pushed - hence the popular slogan, “Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down!”

I am a pastor’s wife, mother of seven, work full time and travel nearly every weekend as an itinerant minister. My life, like many of yours, is busy!  I have found that as I daily seek the LORD in the midst of my busy life and hectic schedule, He truly does establish my steps – and is that internal stability that keeps me standing erect against all that is pushing and pulling at my life.  Psalm 37 says the steps of a man are “established” by God. The word established means to stand erect or to set up. It sounds to me like God wants to be the internal “weight’ that keeps my life in balance and free of wobbling.

My earthly father was never one to stop and ask for driving directions. He would stubbornly insist on finding his own way, even if it meant getting lost and driving miles in the opposite direction. He laughs about it now, realizing all he gained was loads of frustration and lost time and energy. Sometimes, I can be like that too. Instead of stopping in the midst of my busyness and asking the Lord to direct my hectic schedule and help me prioritize wisely, I insist on doing it myself. Sadly, all doing it myself accomplishes is the addition of more stress and anxiety to my life.

Proverbs 3:6 tells us that if we acknowledge the Lord in all our ways, He will direct our path.  The challenge we face as believers is to position ourselves daily, carving out time in the midst of the busyness to seek His face and direction. Have you taken the time to acknowledge Him today? Why don’t you pause for moment and acknowledge the God who spoke the Universe into being, giving Him your schedule and busy agenda and ask Him to direct every decision you make and order every step you take. Imagine that, the same God who spoke the Universe into being - the One who tells the sun when to shine and gives the waves their boundaries wants to order and guide our steps. If He can manage the Universe, I’m pretty certain He can keep the weeble in you from wobbling.
